If you’re like most people, you probably find tech demos boring and dull. Google wants to change that. Google is now offering an outlet called Demo Slam for video makers to showcase imaginative tech demos to be judged by online audiences.

Demo Slam is a brand new experiment, with its first competition opening today, and is a bit confusing as to why it was even created in the first place. What’s in it for the video creators? The answer is good old publicity. What’s in it for Google? Seems like a very clever way to promote their own products as, so far, all the Demo-slams on the site have shown off various Google products.

Demo Slam invites video makers to first upload their tech demo on YouTube and if it becomes enough of a success, it will be chosen as a ‘Contender’. There is a competition every week between two different Contender videos, called Slams, and viewers can give a thumbs up to the one they like more. You can vote in the first competition that has begun today.

The videos that have been showcased so far are actually quite clever and entertaining. For instance, there is one example of Google identifying Mount Rushmore from a very cool paper Mache sculpture using Google Image Search and one example of Google identifying Skateboarding from the sounds made by skateboards on a ramp using Google Search by Voice.

You wouldn’t think Google needs help in publicizing itself as it’s doubtful that there’s anyone on earth that hasn’t heard of Google. However, Google has so many mini-projects going on, that not all of them get the proper amount of exposure to the public. In order for videos creators to gain ideas, there is a full page on DemoSlam dedicated to showing different Google products such as Search by Voice, Image Search and Search by photograph.

It will be very intriguing to see what other inventive entries will be presented on DemoSlam in the upcoming weeks.
